How is Freight Class Calculated?

Freight class is a standardized LTL shipping system that assigns a numerical class from 50 to 500 based on density, stowability, handling, and liability. Density is the primary factor: weight divided by volume in cubic feet. Higher density means lower freight class and generally lower shipping costs. The NMFC establishes these classifications.
